Emirates Breaks Ground on US$5.1 Billion Engineering Mega Facility at Dubai South
Dubai, UAE — Emirates has officially commenced construction of a landmark US$5.1 billion aviation engineering complex at Dubai South, marking one of the largest investments in aircraft maintenance and engineering infrastructure in the global aviation industry.
The ultra-modern facility, announced by Emirates Group, is set to become one of the world’s most advanced Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) hubs, significantly expanding the airline’s engineering capabilities while reinforcing Dubai’s position as a leading international aviation centre.
Spanning approximately 1.1 million square metres, the new engineering complex will feature cutting-edge technology, integrated maintenance systems, and large-scale operational capacity capable of servicing up to 28 wide-body aircraft simultaneously, including the Airbus A380 and Boeing 777 fleets.
Industry officials stated that the project will house the world’s largest free-span aircraft hangar and the largest dedicated landing gear workshop, alongside specialised repair centres, training facilities, logistics zones, and administrative offices.
The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by senior UAE aviation leaders, including Emirates Group Chairman and Chief Executive Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum and Emirates President Sir Tim Clark, highlighting the strategic importance of the development to the UAE’s long-term aviation vision.
Construction of the mega facility is being undertaken by China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC), with international consultancy support from Artelia. The project is expected to be completed by 2030.
Speaking at the event, Emirates officials emphasised that the new engineering hub will support the airline’s future fleet expansion, operational efficiency, and technological innovation, while also generating significant employment and economic opportunities within the region.
The development forms part of Dubai South’s broader masterplan surrounding Al Maktoum International Airport, which is undergoing major expansion to accommodate future passenger and cargo growth.
Analysts view the investment as a strategic move by Emirates to strengthen its long-term operational resilience amid rising global demand for aviation maintenance services and next-generation aerospace infrastructure.
Once operational, the facility is expected to position Emirates Engineering among the world’s most technologically advanced aviation engineering operations, further enhancing Dubai’s status as a global leader in aviation, logistics, and connectivity.
