The Ceylon Chamber of Commerce and the Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce & Industry (SGCCI), Surat, have renewed their Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), reaffirming their commitment to strengthening trade, investment and commercial cooperation between Sri Lanka and Gujarat.

The renewed agreement was signed by Krishan Balendra, Chairperson of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce, and Ashok Jirawala, President of SGCCI, during a visit by an SGCCI business delegation to Colombo.

The renewal comes at a time when businesses in both markets are seeking to identify more targeted opportunities for trade, investment and long-term commercial partnerships.

Following the signing ceremony, the visiting delegation participated in an interactive business networking session with representatives of Sri Lankan companies, providing an opportunity to explore potential partnerships across a range of industries.

Broad-Based Business Engagement

The SGCCI delegation represented several key sectors, including textiles and apparel, textile materials, garment accessories, manufacturing and industrial products, gems and jewellery, waste management and waste-to-energy, information technology, spices and processed food.

Discussions in the textile and apparel sector focused on opportunities for Gujarat-based suppliers to establish stronger links with Sri Lanka’s well-developed apparel manufacturing industry.

Meanwhile, manufacturers of garment accessories and industrial products explored potential supply, distribution and commercial partnership opportunities with Sri Lankan businesses.

Opportunities in Gems and Jewellery

The gems and jewellery sector was also a major area of interest during the business discussions.

Members of the Gujarat delegation expressed interest in sourcing Sri Lankan sapphires and other gemstones, while also seeking opportunities to establish relationships with local jewellery manufacturers, industry associations and women entrepreneurs operating in the sector.

The engagement could create new avenues for collaboration between businesses in the two markets and further strengthen Sri Lanka’s links with Gujarat’s established jewellery and trading ecosystem.

Technology, Investment and Two-Way Trade

Beyond conventional trade opportunities, the discussions also explored potential cooperation in investment and technology, particularly in areas such as waste-to-energy solutions and digital technologies.

Participants also examined opportunities to expand two-way trade in spices and processed food products, highlighting the potential for businesses in both markets to access new products, suppliers and distribution networks.

The discussions demonstrated the scale and diversity of Gujarat’s manufacturing and trading sector, while highlighting opportunities for Sri Lankan businesses to gain access to new markets, technologies, suppliers and potential investment partners.

Strengthening Business-to-Business Connections

With the MoU now renewed, the two chambers are expected to continue facilitating business-to-business connections between companies in Sri Lanka and Gujarat.

The chambers will also support the exchange of market and industry information and assist businesses seeking to identify commercial opportunities in each other’s markets.

The renewed partnership is expected to provide a stronger platform for private-sector engagement and contribute to the expansion of trade and investment relations between Sri Lanka and Gujarat.
