nilever Sri Lanka has recently unveiled its latest sustainability initiative: a cutting-edge 2.33 MW solar power project at its Horana factory. Teaming up with Abans Electricals PLC for implementation, this venture marks a significant stride in Unilever’s dedication to renewable energy, with a hefty investment of 1.3 million Euros.
Aligned with Unilever’s Global Climate Transition Action Plan (CTAP), the project is in harmony with Sri Lanka’s ambitions to transition its energy landscape to renewables by 2030, as envisioned by the Ministry of Power and Energy.
Ali Tariq, Chairman and CEO of Unilever Sri Lanka, expressed pride in this eco-friendly endeavor, highlighting Unilever’s commitment to environmental stewardship. This solar project is poised to meet 30%-35% of the Horana factory’s energy needs, substantially reducing carbon emissions by an impressive 2,090 metric tons annually, akin to the positive impact of planting over 48,000 trees.
Minister Kanchana Wijesekera commended Unilever Sri Lanka’s proactive approach, emphasizing the importance of private sector involvement in achieving national renewable energy targets. He stressed the imperative to shift from traditional power sources to renewables like solar, wind, and biomass, in light of escalating climate change challenges.
Unilever Sri Lanka, a frontrunner in FMCG manufacturing and distribution, is dedicated to sustainable practices through its Unilever Sustainable Living Plan (USLP). This includes active participation in the Climate Transition Action Plan (CTAP), with plans to expand solar generation to 4MWs by 2024.
With an eye on achieving net zero emissions by 2039, Unilever Sri Lanka is prioritizing climate action, nature conservation, plastic reduction, and livelihood support as pillars of its sustainability agenda from 2024 onwards, underscoring its commitment to responsible business practices.
