he much-anticipated Kite Surfing Festival in Kalpitiya, sponsored by Sri Lanka Tourism, has been called off due to a severe fly infestation in the area.
“After the monsoon rains and subsequent flooding in Kalpitiya, there is a significant fly infestation. Consequently, we have to cancel the kite surfing festival,” stated Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB) Chairman Chalaka Gajabahu at the ‘Navigating Challenges and Seizing Opportunities in Sri Lanka’s Tourism Industry’ forum organized by the Council for Business with Britain last week.
Kalpitiya, famous for its reliable wind conditions, is a top destination for kite surfers. The region boasts two main wind seasons: the winter season from December to March with strong, steady winds of 20 to 30 knots, and the summer season from May to October with gentler winds, ideal for beginners and leisurely rides.
The Kalpitiya lagoon, with its flat, shallow waters, provides perfect conditions for learning kitesurfing, ensuring a smooth and safe experience.
In addition to kitesurfing, Kalpitiya offers various other attractions. Visitors can enjoy dolphin and whale watching, explore the historic Dutch Fort, or take a boat trip to the beautiful Bar Reef Marine Sanctuary.
Despite the festival’s cancellation, Kalpitiya remains an attractive destination where wind, water, and adventure meet.
The SLTPB Chief assured that efforts are underway to address the fly infestation and restore the area to its usual pristine condition with the help of local government authorities and the Health Ministry.
