ri Lanka’s government has greenlit plans to attract investors for a new 200 Megawatt power facility under a build-own-operate-and-transfer (BOOT) model, as per an official announcement.
This internal combustion power plant, designed to operate on natural gas, forms a crucial part of the Ceylon Electricity Board’s long-term expansion strategy. The selected investor will secure a 20-year power purchase agreement.
The government has earmarked land adjacent to the existing ‘Sobhadanavi’ combined cycle plant for the project developer’s use. The new 200MW facility is slated to commence operations by 2026, aligning with the retirement schedule of other aging power assets. Specifically, by 2026, the CEB plans to phase out a 115 MW gas turbine as well as its own diesel plants of 68 MW and 72 MW.
