President Ranil Wickremesinghe announced at a public rally in Matara on June 30 that Sri Lanka is working towards a swift agreement with sovereign bondholders, with hopes for a resolution as early as next week.

“Following the signing of bilateral MOUs, representatives of the bondholders began discussions with us,” President Wickremesinghe explained. “I initially thought it might take a month, but we’ve been making significant progress. I am optimistic that we will reach a successful agreement by next week.”

He added, “Once we finalize this deal, we will address all three agreements, including those with the Paris Club and China. I have asked Harsha de Silva, Chairman of the Committee on Public Finance, to handle the process.”

Wickremesinghe also mentioned that he might not be able to present the full details of the Paris Club and China debt deals to Parliament this week. “If we reveal too much information, it could complicate negotiations with private creditors,” he said.

“I will provide a detailed report in Parliament. Although I may not disclose all details, I will make a comprehensive statement, and we will discuss it before the committee examines it and a vote is taken. The Parliament will decide whether to accept the agreements or not.”
